Bunker Hill CUSD #8 takes the privacy and online safety of our students very seriously. We have always taken steps to guard closely the student data collected within our networks or by the online resources we use in our schools. Effective July 1, 2021, all school districts will be required by the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) to provide additional guarantees that student data is protected when collected by educational technology companies and that the data is used for beneficial purposes only. The goal of SOPPA aligns with the goal of Bunker Hill CUSD #8: increase transparency, protect student data and protect students.

What happens to the student data that we send to a third party vendor? Information like names, birthdates, etc. may be provided by Bunker Hill CUSD #8 to a third party like IXL, Teacher Ease, STAR, etc. What protections do those companies have in place to make sure that our students' data is not sold or freely given to others? This is exactly what SOPPA aims to address.

As part of SOPPA, each company must enter into Data Privacy Agreements (DPA's) with each district with whom they partner. These agreements outline what data is stored, how it is protected, what the company can and cannot do with that data, and what they will do in the event of a data breach.
