Tax Referendum – how much?

Currently the Board of Education has two options – a $ .495  option and a $. 69 option.  The difference has to due with the length of time the bond would be paid back.  Just like a car payment, the larger payments pay it off more quickly.  The financial burden is a bit heavier, but the length of time of that burden is shorter.

 Example -----   $150,000 home with a $.50 increase

$150,000 home is taxed at one-third the value of the home  = $50,000 home

Taxes are applied per $100 of value  =  $500

2006 tax rate of about $4.14 makes the tax bill for this home about $2070.

 Bond tax increase (for example)

New tax is applied at the rate to the amount of $500

  If it were a 50 cents increase:         $500 x $.50 = $250.00

Tax rate with Bond addition = $4.14+ $.50 = $4.64

New tax bill for the home is now = $2320 (for a limited number of years) or less than a $ .70 a day increase for this property owner.

 Example -----   $150,000 home with a $.70 increase

$150,000 home is taxed at one-third the value of the home  = $50,000 home

Taxes are applied per $100 of value  =  $500

2006 tax rate of about $4.14 makes the tax bill for this home about $2070.

 Bond tax increase (for example)

New tax is applied at the rate to the amount of $500

 If it were a 70 cents increase:         $500 x $.70 = $350.00

 Tax rate with Bond addition = $4.14+ $.70 = $4.84

New tax bill for the home is now = $2420 (for a limited number of years) or slightly less than  $ .96 a day increase for this property owner.
