White Pine  Pinus strobus L.

Leaves:  blue-green leaves in clusters of 5

Flower:   staminate in yellow spikes, pistillate pink to purple

Fruit:   oblong cones, up to 8 inches long

Twig:  slender, orange-brown, smooth and slightly hairy

Bark:  lightweight, soft, light brown

Form:  tree


 

The White Pine is used for interior finishing and construction. This type of tree gets to over 100 feet tall in some regions of the United States. The trunk diameter gets to be about 3 feet. The soft, blue-green needles in clusters of 5 are readily distinguish the White Pine.

Habitat:  Moist woods and slopes

Range:     Southeastern Canada, Northeastern United States, and Appalachian Mountains

Location:    This tree is in front of Meissner Elementary School, 504 East Warren, Bunker Hill, IL.  The tree is located close to the road and it is the shortest tree. Latitude- 39 ° 0.2571' North, Longitude- 89 ° 56.857' West
