Informational Technology

District Overview:

Bunker Hill Community Unit District #8 is committed to moving into the 21st century as a leader in the use of technology to improve education. The district has extended it's committment to technology in the last 3 years, increasing the budgeted amounts as needs changed and demand for new services arose. In 1994-95, the student to computer ratio was approximately 12:1. Our current student to computer ratio is 6:1. By the end of the 97-98 school year, our ratio will be 5:1.
The National average is currently 7.2:1.

Grant funds totaling $159,303.00 for the 1997-98 school year will allow the district to realize a long-range goal this year- to have every classroom in the district equipped witha computer and connected to the Internet. Our connection to the Internet is equivalent to T-1 speeds and sometimes higher with a burstable rate between building locations. This will give all three schools access to the Internet, including access for all teachers, students and administrators.

Bunker Hill was one of only 27 districts in the state of Illinois to recieve funds from the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund, allowing us to place computers in all the classrooms from K-8. Teacher training is also a vital part of this grant. The focus of this program for Bunker Hill is to increase math, reading, and language skills scores.

The Building-Based Innovations Through Technology Grant allowed us to install a second lab at the Bunker Hill High School for use by content-area classes. We were also able to place additional computers in the libraries of both the Jr. High and Senior High schools. Teacher training was also a large part of this grant.

These funds, along with a State Allocation for Technology Grant, as well as fundraising efforts by the Jr. High school LITE Computer Club will assure that the district continues in it's mission of providing quality education enhanced by the use of Technology.
