On Saturday, September 16, the Minutemen had a football game against the Woodriver Oilers. The Minutemen, winning the coin toss, decided to defer and defend the scoreboard. The fist quarter remained scoreless for both teams. About midway through the second quarter, the Minutemen made the first touchdown of the game. At halftime the score was still 7 to 0. The Bunker Hill coaches, while giving their pep talk, reminded the team about their game against Carlinville. In that game the Minutemen were up by a touchdown at the half and then Carlinville came back to beat the Minutemen. That pep talk really got the team riled up.
The Oilers kicked off to the Minutemen in the beginning of the second half. The Minutemen, remembering what the coaches had said, ran the kickoff back for a touchdown making the score 14 to 0. About a minute and a half later the Minutemen scored another touchdown although the field goal was no good because of a bad snap. Three minutes into the second half, the minutemen were up 20 to 0. The rest of the third quarter and almost all of the fourth quarter went back and forth, up and down the field. With only a minute to g, the Minutemen were looking for ashutout game. Only 32 seconds were on the clock and the Oilers finally made a touchdown and a successful 2-point conversion. The final effort by the Oilers, however, wasn't good enough to overcome the speed and agility of the Bunker Hill Minutemen. The locker room was wild with the celebrating football team that just had earned their first win of the season. The final score was Minutemen 20, Oilers 8.
